AFUERA in Spanish stands for out or outside. In this experimental short film, which is structured like a filmed abstract essay, two nameless figures find themselves isolated in a room. A wordless dialogue unfolds between them, although it remains unclear whether one of them is merely left to the imagination of the other. Fragments of thought based on writings by Erich Maria Remarque and the Jewish intellectual Etty Hillesum pose the question: How can we overcome loneliness and suffering and preserve our sanity and mental health when faced with isolation, separation and adversity?
